Autumn Fest Coming to St. Paul's United Church of Christ The congregation invites you to Autumn Fest at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 1538 Oregon Road, Rockford for Fun, Food, and Fellowship as they raise money for CALL Ministries for the Celina and Parkway Back-Pack Programs. Friday, October 2 - No School for students due to Teacher In-service Parkway Local Schools Seeking Nominations for the ìAcademic Alumni Hall of Fameî The goal for the Academic Alumni Hall of Fame is to recognize successful former students who have contributed to their profession and community while practicing character qualities such as perseverance, self-discipline, curiosity, honesty, responsibility, etc. They serve as an example for current students and former graduates as well as all of the community. Nominations for the hall of fame may be made by anyone. Criteria for nomination are: 1) a graduate of Parkway Local Schools (including Willshire, Rockford, Mendon-Union, and Parkway), 2) graduated at least ten years prior to nomination, 3) give time to enhance their profession, and 4) demonstrate leadership, citizenship, and volunteerism. The award is presented at the Parkway High School Spring Awards Program in May to no more than 3 recipients annually. A plaque listing all recipients is to be displayed in a high traffic and visibility area for students and community members. Nominees either send a testimonial or speak briefly to the students about how character education helped them achieve success at the Awards Night. The Academic Hall of Fame encourages students to develop good character to lead to success. To nominate individuals for the Parkway Local Schools Academic Alumni Hall of Fame, contact Parkway High School at 419-363-3045, ext #760 or mail Parkway High School, 400 Buckeye St., Rockford, OH 45882. Please provide the individualís name, year of graduation, career position, and current contact information; or you may complete the application posted on parkwayschools.org and mail it to the address above. Nominations must be submitted by November 20, to be considered. Upon nomination, individuals will receive information on applying for the Academic Alumni Hall of Fame. Applications must be completed by January 10 of each year. A committee of five Parkway staff members score the applications using a rubric to determine each yearís recipients. Applicants are notified in February of the results. Previous nominees are encouraged update their applications by the January 10 deadline. Previous applications are kept on file indefinitely. Wright State University Plans Agriculture and Water Quality Center CELINA, OH ñ Wright State University (WSU) and the Lake Campus will proceed with the planning and development of an Agriculture and Water Quality Center, a facility that will house laboratories, classrooms and faculty offices dedicated to this purpose. According to Lake Campus Dean Jay Albayyari, Ph.D., the Center exemplifies the progress that Wright State University has made toward the goals of the ìRise. Shineî resource campaign. As part of Capital Campaign initiatives specific to the Lake Campus and announced this past Spring, the Center will house the support for key programs that reflect community and regional needs related to the agriculture industry, as well as foster innovation for water quality research and collaborations. The cost of the project, approximately $3 million, is being funded by $1.5 million allocated from Senator Keith Faber and matched by $1.5 million raised by WSU. The University will move forward with requesting proposals for the facility within the next 6-12 months, with construction to commence upon completion of that process. "Many thanks to our Senator, WSU President David R. Hopkins, and Lake Campus Agriculture Associate Professor Dr. Greg Homan, as well as the agriculture community, and all who supported the Idea of dedicating funds to our campus to enhance our educational programs in this high-demand field,î states Dean Albayyari. Call 419-394-6227 September 29, 2015 Genealogists to Meet Sunday October 4th at 2:00 pm is the next meeting of the Mercer County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society. The guest speaker will be Nancy Knapke, Director of the Fort Recovery Museum. Fort Recovery is the site of two important battles in the early history of the United States. The meeting is free and the public is welcome. The group meets at the Richardson Bretz Building in Celina the first Sunday of the month September through May. Public Meeting Announced The Village of Rockford will be holding a Public Meeting regarding the Aggregation of Electric and Gas services. The meeting will be held at the Rockford Village Hall on October 20th at 7 pm. The Public is encouraged to attend so that questions can be answered. This will be on the November 3rd ballot. Rockford Area Development Corporation to Meet Our next meeting is scheduled for Monday, September 28th at 7:30 pm in the Rockford Library basement. Parkway Boys Golf team Finishes 3rd in the MAC Teammates Win Individually in MAC The Parkway Boys Golf team finished the MAC season with a 3rd place finish at the Midwest Athletic Conference tournament at Arrowhead Golf Club (par 72) in Minster. The Panthers scored a 357 finishing behind only Versailles (346) and St. Henry (350). This score along with their 7-2 dual match record put the team in solo third place, behind co-champions St. Henry and Versailles. Leading the way for the Panthers was Hayden Lyons who shot an 86. Cole Schoenleben had the next best score with an 88. Connor Morton carded a 90 and Clayton Agler shot a 93 to finish the scoring for Parkway's 357. David Gause shot a 98 and Ashton Hamrick a 108 for the Panthers as well. Hayden Lyons won first team all MAC honors. Connor Morton earned a 2nd team all MAC award and both Clayton Agler and Cole Schoenleben earned Honorable Mention all MAC for Parkway. Celina Education Association Comments ìThe Celina Education Association is deeply disappointed that the Celina Board of Education has chosen to violate Ohio law and publish misleading information on the school districtís website. Because CEA is following the law, we will not respond to the information posted on the website at this time. Celina teachers will continue to direct our focus on the education and well-being of the students of Celina City Schools and leave negotiations to our bargaining team.î CEA is a local affiliate of the Ohio Education Association (OEA) and the National Education Association (NEA). CEA represents the approximately 199 teachers, librarians, nurses and counselors in the Celina City School District. Parkway Business Club Collecting Bottle Caps The Parkway Business Club, as a service project, is collecting plastic bottle caps and lids so that they can have them made into benches to grace the front of the school. If you are interested in helping with this project, bring your caps and lids to the high school office. Renewal Levy on the Ballot in November 2015 Parkway voters will be voting on the renewal of the 8.97 mill tax levy on November 3, 2015. This is a renewal levy and will not increase taxes. The money is used for operating expenses. Kids Club and Free Community Dinner Coming to Rockford Methodist Church The Rockford United Methodist Church (419-363-3230) will begin its weekly Kids Club and Free Community Dinner this Wednesday, September 2nd. Kids Club: 3:30 (after school) There is a bus that can take them from Parkway Schools Community Dinner: FIVE02 (5:02 p.m.) The Bible Study will begin next week September 9th at 6:15 PM Van Wert County Hospital & Orthopaedic Institute of Ohio Open ìBump Clinicî Van Wert, Ohio ñ Van Wert County Hospital and the Orthopaedic Institute of Ohio (OIO) have teamed together to offer the Bump Clinic, a sports medicine walk-in clinic open every Saturday from 8-10 a.m., beginning August 29, 2015. The Bump Clinic is available to athletes of all ages. Athletes under 18 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The Bump Clinic will offer sports physical therapy, orthopedic surgery, x-rays, and MRI services ñ all onsite at Van Wert County Hospital, with no appointment needed. Athletes are requested to use the main entrance of Van Wert County Hospital. ìWe wanted to offer a convenient service to athletes of all ages in our community ñ from young kids playing soccer for the first time, to high school football players, to adult athletes,î said Sheila Brokenshire, Vice President of Nursing Services at Van Wert County Hospital. ìIf an athlete gets hurt in a game on Friday night, we wanted a place for that athlete to be seen right away on Saturday morning. She is employed at Tidewater Dental in Lexington Park, Maryland. The prospective groom is a 2003 graduate of Parkway High School and a 2008 graduate of The Ohio State University with a bachelorís degree in aeronautical astronautical engineering. Three Arrested in Rockford Burglary Mercer County Sheriffís deputies recently arrested 3 individuals following a theft at T.J.ís Grocerette in Rockford. Kenneth Longstreath, Danny Lee Longstreath, and John William Coile, of Dayton, were charged with breaking and entering, and the theft of cigarettes. Congratulations to Parkway Freshman Haley Hawk Haley Hawk recently earned 1st Team All state honors as an infielder. During the recent Parkway Softball Season she set new records for the school. She had nine Home runs and 55 RBIís. The previous records for home runs were held by Emily Crowell and Sierra Fent at eight each and Amanda Schummís runs batted in record was 42. Memorial Day in Rockford - Pictures Shared by Nikki Fox Photography A large and respectful crowd honored Veterans on Memorial Day in Rockford. It was a pleasure to hear Tina (Schlickman) Heitkamp speak of her own experiences as a child at the Memorial Day Parades in Willshire, and then go on to honor those in her family who had served in the armed forces including her father-in-law Al Heitkamp who recently passed away. She honored and spoke of all the people we knew who had served because it was the right thing to do. Al and Jerome Bollenbacher, both Veterans of World War II, Tina explained, have been going to all local cemeteries for many, many years to place American Flags on the graves of all veterans. 300 flags are placed yearly with flag holders repaired and often searches for the graves themselves. This took a lot of time, but was tended with pride by Al and Jerome. After Al's death, Jerome came to Tina wondering what he would do in the absence of his comrade. Tina took up the challenge and went with Jerome this year. The tradition lives on ! Mendon Memorial Day Parade Started Out the Parkway Parade Route Bright and Early The Celina American Legion and Auxiliary were in Mendon early to honor local veterans from the Mendon Area. They lead the parade to the St. Marys River on the edge of town where young and old threw fresh cut flowers into the river as a sign of honor and respect. The Parkway Band entertained on the march back to the park where Mort Ward Commander of the Legion lead the 21 gun salute by locale legion members. Parkway 2015 Co-Valedictorian: Kayle Heckler, daughter of Chris Flores & Roger Heckler, was chosen to read her award winning essay about remembering the veterans. She had a touching and respectful look at those who had served to preserve her freedom, as seen through the eyes of a young person. She received a rousing round of applause. Willshire Memorial Day Parade Highlighted by Parkway Band and Speaker Aleta Weis The American Legion under the command of Dick Edgel led a large crowd from downtown Willshire to the cemetery on the outskirts. After prayer, Dick introduced local Aleta Weiss who has come to be known in the area as an avid supporter of Veterans. Each year she and her husband Bill Wiess transform their Willshire Home Furnishings business in Willshire into a museum for Veterans Memorabilia. This year the display included military vehicles. Civil War Roundtable Meets Soon ñ All invited Roundtable program for the evening of May 28 is local friend Phil DeHaven, will be guest speaker. They will meet at 7:15 PM in room 154 Dwyer Hall at Wright State Lake Campus in Celina. Phil is widely sought to appear at Civil War Roundtable meetings, and is one of the favorites at our meetings. He is a retired history teacher, former Mayor of Union City, IN and former president of the Randolph County (Indiana) Civil War Roundtable. He will be making his sixth appearance at our Roundtable. This will be the final meeting of the season...we will return in September. Baseball Tournament Kicks off Summer Rec program This past weekend, May 16 and 17th, Shaneís Park in Rockford hosted a 9 year-old and under baseball tournament with 8 teams from northwest Ohio competing. The audience enjoyed all the songs, and even sang along with several of them. Mercer County Engineering Complex Open House Held 12-6-2014 Jim Weichart, Mercer County Engineer, and employees of the Engineering Department held an open house for their newly completed facility on Mud Pike west of Celina on Saturday, December 6, 2014. The new multi-million dollar complex, at 77,000 square feet, features Administrative Offices, Vehicle Maintenance Wing, Vehicle Storage Wing, Fueling Center, Salt & Grit Storage and a Vehicle Wash Bay. Bruns Building and Development was the General Contractor and Garmann-Miller was the architect. The development of the engineerís facility was in the planning process for more than a decade, according to the literature passed out at the Open House. Former County Engineers, Keith G. Earley, P.E., P. S. and Roy F. Thompson, P.E., P.S. began the planning process, and a multitude of private and public teams brought the structure to reality. At left: One of the newest tandem axle dump trucks in the Mercer County Engineer's fleet. It features an automatic transmission and is equipped with a 12 foot snow plow. It is used for other work in the summer. Rockford Eagles Donate to Back Pack Program and College Students The Rockford Eagles Aerie 1292 recently donated $2000 to the Parkway Back Pack Program. Pastor Tim Clutter, above, accepts the check from Blair Shaffer, on behalf of his ministry C.A.L.L. Ministries. Tim says they need $4200 to fully fund the program across the Mercer County, and he deeply appreciated the generous check from the Eagles on behalf of the Parkway children. Tim said Parkway children in K-4th grade get a bag of food sent home every weekend including 2 breakfasts; 2 lunches; 2 suppers; 2 snacks and 1 or 2 drinks per child. A jar of peanut butter goes home to the households on free meals at school a the beginning of each month. 260 students are involved at Parkway, and this is the 4th year for the program there. Volunteer Deb Hecht oversees the program with a team of 15 volunteers helping her. The Rockford Eagles Aerie 1292 recently gave renewal scholarships to students who are Wright State University Lake Campus and are parkway graduates. Tia Caffee, daughter of John and Lisa (Painter) Caffee of Willshire will graduate in May 2014 with an Associates Degree in Graphic Design. An outstanding artist at Parkway, she graduated in 2013. Tegan Felver, daughter of Carl and Deena Felver is also from Willshire, and will graduate with an Associates Degree in Business Applications. Aslo a graduate of Parkway 2013, Tegan is learning office management and enjoys MS Access Database the best. Others who were not present but received renewals were: Austin Adams, Amber Swander and Kirsten Schriema. Left to right: Blair Shaffer explained that the renewals would go directly to Wright State. Tegan and Tia stand next to Wright State University Development Officer, Julie M. Miller. The Rockford Eagles have funded $30,188.00 from 2006-2013 and $8,000 for 2014-2015. All of this money went for Parkway scholarships furthering their education.
